The Theory and Practice of the Early Years Foundation Stage.

Ioanna Palaiologou

Ioanna Palaiologou recently published her 4th Edition of The Early Years Foundation Stage: Theory and Practice.  This is a book included in countless reading lists that has influenced so many students.  It covers policy, pedagogy, the areas of learning and development,  assessment, and more. In this seminar, Ioanna will tell us about the journey of its production and the key questions, challenges and issues that might yet be addressed in a 5th edition…

This seminar will include contributions from other contributors to the book.  A discount on the publication price will be available to those who attend.

Thank you to all for your hard work during the ongoing pandemic…

Last year, we held our AGM virtually because the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic meant we couldn’t meet in person. As a result of this, we did not need to book a venue. With the money we saved, we are making donations to three organisations who have been doing wonderful work throughout the pandemic, with children and their families. We would like to thank everyone who is continuously adapting their work in order to support children and their families throughout the pandemic, and working to keep everyone safe.

Partnership with Parents in Early Childhood Settings – new book!

As part of an Erasmus+ project we have been involved in, a book has been written. This due to be published at the end of 2020. The editors are both members of our OMEP UK Executive Committee and members have contributed to chapters within.

“The book looks at some of the different parent programmes that have been introduced in Europe and highlights the positive ways in which professionals can work with parents as well as the potential barriers to parental partnership and how these might be overcome. Each section focuses on a different country and allows for a detailed exploration into how relationships are developed and sustained for the benefit of young children and their families in different contexts. Throughout, the reader is encouraged to reflect on their current understandings of parental partnership and how they can plan for positive parental partnership working in the future. This thought-provoking text will be an indispensable resource for students of early childhood, practitioners as well as those interested in social policy, academics and researchers.”

You can find out more about the book and can pre-order it here.

Upcoming OMEP events affected by the Covid-19 pandemic

The OMEP UK AGM and Seminar 2020

We were hoping to hold our 2020 AGM and Seminar in Liverpool in October 2020. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we now anticipate that this will be held virtually. Please keep an eye out for updates about this.

The 72nd World Assembly and Conference 2020

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the World Conference 2020 will not be going ahead as planned in the Summer 2020. More information about the event can be found on the website.

Student sponsorship opportunity to attend the 72nd World Conference in Athens!

All students with a keen interest in children and the future of childhood are invited to apply! If you are successful this will also allow you to observe the World Congress and World Assembly proceedings as one of the UK’s official observers before the conference begins. The event is being held 13th – 17th July 2020.

Students who are interested in applying for sponsorship must submit to a written application of no more than 1000 words, detailing the following:

– why they would like the opportunity to attend the World Conference,

– how the conference will support their own personal and professional development, with focus on key themes of the conference,

– their understanding around the World Organisation for Early Childhood (OMEP)’s work and responsibilities,

– what they can offer OMEP UK following the conference.

The closing date to receive written applications is Friday 6th March 2020 at 5pm. These should be emailed to ukomep@gmail.com. Students must be able to provide confirmation of their student status if requested. Students must also be a member of OMEP UK at the point of applying for sponsorship. This currently costs £15.

Once the closing date for receiving written applications has passed, the OMEP UK committee will shortlist at their next meeting. Following this, shortlisted candidates will be invited to a Skype interview with two members of the Committee. Interviews will take place in the week beginning 16th March 2020. Final decisions will then be made shortly afterwards. Successful candidates will be required to arrange their own transport, accommodation and conference fees, which OMEP UK will reimburse to the sum of up to £750. Of course, successful applicants should liaise with the Treasurer if support is needed prior to the event. Many UK members are also attending the conference so there may be opportunity to travel or stay together with other members or students attending. For more information about the conference, please visit the website.

For questions related to your application, please email us using the email address provided above. We look forward to receiving your application!
